Shavat Border → Kunya-Urgench → Darvaza Gas Crater → Ashgabat → Kow-Ata → Turkmenbashi → Yangykala Canyon → Nohur → Ashgabat → Ancient Merv & Türkmen Ojagy → Mary → Farap Border
Discover Turkmenistan on a journey connecting the historic monuments of Kunya-Urgench, the desert landscapes of Darvaza, the white-marble capital of Ashgabat and the colourful escarpments of Yangykala Canyon.
Travel west through Kow-Ata to the Caspian region, spend a night in the mountain village of Nohur, and explore Old Nisa, an Akhal-Teke horse farm and the National Museum. Continue east to Ancient Merv and Türkmen Ojagy before departing through the Farap border towards Uzbekistan.
This is an active itinerary covering northern, western and eastern Turkmenistan. The western section involves substantial road travel, with early starts, focused sightseeing and overnight stops that follow the route.
Start: Shavat checkpoint, Turkmenistan side
Finish: Farap checkpoint, Turkmenistan side
Hotel accommodation basis: Twin or double rooms unless otherwise agreed; guesthouse and yurt arrangements confirmed separately
Your journey begins at the Shavat border crossing, where your professional local guide meets you on the Turkmenistan side after you have completed the Uzbek exit and Turkmen entry procedures. The planned meeting time is around 10:00, subject to the actual border formalities.
Continue to Kunya-Urgench, the former capital of Khorezm and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore its surviving monuments with your guide, who introduces the city’s historical importance and the architectural traditions represented here.
See the Kutlug-Timur Minaret and visit the mausoleums of Turabek Khanum and Sultan Tekesh, taking time to appreciate their proportions, craftsmanship and surviving decorative details. The order and duration of the visits are arranged around the time available after the border crossing.
Stop for lunch at a local restaurant at your own expense before continuing south through the Karakum Desert. The journey leads away from the settled north into open desert landscapes, with comfort breaks along the road.
On arrival in the Darvaza area, use a suitable vehicle for the final unpaved approach and settle into your traditional yurt camp. Visit the gas crater as daylight fades, including sunset when arrival timing allows, and spend time beside the crater after dark.
Return to camp for an included barbecue dinner and an overnight in a traditional yurt.
Travel: Approx. 400–470 km by road
Overnight: Darvaza yurt camp
Meals included: Barbecue dinner at Darvaza camp
Enjoy breakfast at camp and a final morning look at the crater before leaving Darvaza. The changing light offers a different view of the crater and its desert surroundings from the previous evening.
Travel south through the Karakum Desert, stopping for comfort breaks and photographs along the way. Where access and conditions permit, pause at a smaller mud or water crater viewpoint. Your guide introduces the landscapes encountered along the desert road before the journey continues towards Ashgabat.
Arrive in the capital, check in at the hotel and begin your guided introduction to its monumental architecture. Visit the Independence Monument and the Neutrality Monument, and drive along the broad ceremonial avenues lined with white-marble buildings.
The sightseeing combines selected stops with panoramic drives, allowing you to appreciate the scale and layout of the capital. Your guide explains the place of these landmarks in modern Turkmenistan.
Continue to the Wedding Palace viewpoint when timing and access allow, with opportunities to photograph the surrounding cityscape. As evening falls, enjoy a drive past illuminated monuments, fountains and avenues before returning to the hotel.
Lunch and dinner are at your own expense. The city programme is coordinated with the heritage visits on Day 5, including the museum schedule where necessary.
Travel: Approx. 270–315 km by road, plus local sightseeing
Overnight: Ashgabat hotel
Meals included: Breakfast
After an early breakfast, leave Ashgabat and follow the westbound road towards the Kopet Dag foothills.
Stop at Kow-Ata, a limestone cave containing a naturally warm underground lake. Descend the flights of steps into the cavern and discover the contrast between the dry landscape above ground and the enclosed lake below.
Take time to view the cave and, if you wish, swim when the site is open and local access rules permit. Those choosing to swim should bring swimwear and a towel. Allow time to change before continuing the journey; the descent into the cave and return to the surface involve steps.
Continue west through the Balkan region, taking comfort breaks and a stop for lunch at a local or roadside restaurant at your own expense. The day combines the Kow-Ata visit with a substantial transfer towards the Caspian coast.
Reach Turkmenbashi later in the day and check in at the hotel. If arrival time allows, enjoy a brief city or waterfront orientation before dinner at your own expense.
The evening is reserved for rest before the early departure for Yangykala the following morning.
Travel: Approx. 560–650 km by road
Overnight: Turkmenbashi hotel
Meals included: Breakfast
Depart at dawn, with breakfast at the hotel or a packed breakfast arranged in advance, and travel towards Yangykala Canyon. A suitable vehicle is used for the unpaved approach to the viewing areas.
Explore selected panoramic viewpoints overlooking the canyon’s layered red, pink and white escarpments. Your guide leads short walks near the viewing areas, allowing time to appreciate the contrasting colours, photograph the cliffs and see how the landscape changes from one viewpoint to another.
The visit concentrates on the main accessible panoramas, leaving sufficient time for the onward road journey.
Continue through the Balkanabat area and eastwards towards the Kopet Dag foothills. Comfort breaks and a simple lunch stop at your own expense are arranged along the route. This is one of the longest driving days of the programme, with arrival in Nohur expected towards evening.
Settle into a local guesthouse in Nohur, where the accommodation offers a simpler setting than the city hotels. Depending on daylight, take a short introductory walk through the village and enjoy views of its mountain surroundings. The guided village visit is arranged between this evening and the following morning.
Dinner is at your own expense and should be ordered with the guesthouse hosts in advance. Room configurations and bathroom arrangements are confirmed before booking.
Travel: Approx. 620–700 km by road; a very long day with a dawn departure and late arrival
Overnight: Nohur local guesthouse
Meals included: Breakfast
After breakfast, complete your guided exploration of Nohur. Walk through the village lanes, appreciate the mountain setting and learn about local customs and daily life.
Visit the village’s distinctive cemetery, known for the symbolic mountain-goat horns on the grave markers. Your guide explains the local traditions and helps ensure that the visit and photography respect the community.
Continue towards Ashgabat for a prearranged visit to an Akhal-Teke horse farm. See the horses and learn about the breed’s importance in Turkmen culture, together with an introduction to their care and the farm’s activities. The programme includes a standard guided farm visit; riding and special demonstrations require separate arrangements.
Explore Old Nisa, the UNESCO-listed Parthian archaeological site near the capital. Walk through the remains with your guide, who explains the layout of the site and introduces its place in Turkmenistan’s ancient history.
Visit the National Museum for an introduction to its archaeology and history collections, connecting the exhibits with the sites encountered during your journey.
The order of the heritage visits follows the farm appointment and museum opening schedule. The museum may be visited on Day 2 if this better suits its operating hours.
Check in at the hotel and enjoy an evening at leisure. Lunch and dinner are at your own expense.
Travel: Approx. 170–220 km on the Nohur–Ashgabat road, plus heritage visits and local transfers
Overnight: Ashgabat hotel

Leave Ashgabat after an early breakfast and travel east towards Mary Province. Comfort breaks and a lunch stop at your own expense are arranged along the road.
Near Bayramaly, begin a guided exploration of Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Central Asia’s great Silk Road centres. Your guide introduces the succession of cities that developed across the oasis and explains the surviving monuments in their historical setting.
Visit the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, an important surviving monument of the Seljuk period, and Great Kyz Kala, one of the most recognisable earthen structures in the archaeological landscape.
Continue with selected views of Erk Kala and Gyaur Kala, where access and timing permit. The visits combine stops at the principal monuments with an introduction to the wider archaeological setting and the development of the oasis over successive periods.
Include a prearranged visit to Türkmen Ojagy, an ethnographic complex in the Merv area. Explore its available cultural displays and traditional domestic setting for an introduction to Turkmen customs and everyday life. The standard visit is included; meals, workshops and folklore performances require separate advance arrangements.
Continue to Mary, check in at the hotel and enjoy a short city orientation if arrival time allows. Dinner is at your own expense.

Your guide assists with the Turkmenistan departure arrangements and explains the onward crossing towards Alat in Uzbekistan. The final timing is planned around the confirmed border operating arrangements and current road conditions.
Services conclude on the Turkmenistan side of the Farap border. An onward transfer from the Uzbek side to Bukhara or another destination is available by separate arrangement and is not included in the standard programme.
